I want to build my first engine!?

I want to start building my first engine. Its going to be a 67-69 SBC 350 c.i. My question is where should I start, and opinions on what combinations will give me strong horsepower, nothing for the strip but a summer cruiser that can leave the ricers in the dust. I'm looking to end up with around 500hp so any suggestions would help. No need to worry about the price, however I'm not spending a million dollars on my first engine. Thanks alot.
