I have a question for a SBC "gear head"?

I have a '79 GMC Heavy Half (original 350/350). I was wondering if installing a performance cam is as easy as taking the old one out and putting new one in? Or is there other (original) parts that I would need to upgrade to make sure the new cam isn't "too much" cam.
