Is a 305 sbc a good sized engine?

Had a 89 Camaro rs with a 305.It ran fairly well for the hp it produced.However at around 20,000 miles it started to smoke and had to have valve seals replaced.Do not know if this is common problem in the 305 or just an unfortunate repair on my car.Other contributors might can tell you the answer to that.
