I just installed an edelbrock carb in my sbc and i tried to turn it on after putting the distributor and?

the carb squirted gas up and doesn't start and when i leave the key turning it on it squirted gas straight up out the carb, this is the first time i tried starting it after installing the new intake carb and hei distributor. any help on what it could be? and i know i need to change the spark plug wires, could that also be the problem? because the wires don't fit correctly on the new hei distributor. this is a 71 impala
